Arguments for and against employee loyalty; Point-counterpoint

This is the first in a series of point-counterpoint articles matching up Dudley B. Dawson vs. James Hamilton. The two will be debating four topics over August and early September.

What does it mean to be loyal?

According to Wikipedia, the source of all truthiness since 2001, loyalty means "faithfulness or devotion to a person or cause".

From an employee-employer perspective, loyal employees are employees whose effort is solely focused on the success of the employer as a whole. An employee who is committed to the group effort -- an effort which makes organizations successful. At least that's the theory.

Do employers depend on loyalty from employees? Are disloyal employees immoral? These questions have been debated for nearly as long as James Hamilton has been alive.

However, until now, no two people with less credentials or certifications have debated this topic with the veracity in which you are about to witness. Please be seated, and please turn off your cell phones. Enjoy the show.

Should employees be loyal to their employers?
